Well, it seems that everyone else in New York had decided to visit the Rockefeller with us last night. I had never seen crowds quite like it so whilst we managed to get a good look at the tree (I have never seen so many lights), ice skating was out of the question..
This morning we woke up early again and headed off to visit the 911 memorial. We had a reserved slot at 10.00am, but needed to pick up the tickets from the memorial preview first. We waited in line, showed out tickets to about 10 different people. went through a full security check and queued some more outside in -2c, before we eventually made it in to the memorial site. It was well worth it though. The memorial is quite stunning and seeing all of the names of people killed in the attack surrounding the pools was very moving. Imagining that each of those names was someones son/daughter/mother/father/brother/sister was really quite a sobering thought. The last monument that had moved me as much as this was the Vietnam war memorial in Washington.
There were camera and radio crews everywhere as the millionth visitor entered with us. My wife was interviewed (fortunately by radio as she was wearing my son's hat!!). By my reckoning we were the 1,000,004th visitor.
Afterwards we stopped at the first Starbucks for hot chocolates all round to help us warm up.
Then it was a short but really informative taxi journey (chatty driver) to Time Square. They were busy getting everything prepared for New Years Eve, putting up barriers etc, we had a good look round and then went for lunch at Hard Rock Cafe in Time Square. During lunch we had a family debate about which show we wanted to see and Sister Act met with everyone's approval so when we had finished eating we walked up Broadway to the Sister Act theatre and purchased tickets for tonights performance.
Then we walked back to the hotel to rest up before heading out tonight for dinner (steak at Ruth Chris - my choice) and then the show.
