Convertible Verses SUV verses full size

I'm just about to book a car for my 3.5 week honeymoon in the US, starting in August. Doing a bit of a road trip - starting in Vegas, then Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, then to LA, up the coast to San Fran and a short stay in Napa. Am undecided as to whether to go for a Mustang convertible for fun, an SUV for practicality/size, or a full size for comfort.

    Any advice would be wonderful!

Also we are picking up in Vegas so wonder how to arrange the quick pick up.

    Cheers

Hope you have a wonderful honeymoon. You could always split your car hire and have a convertible for the coast road and one of the others for the rest of the holiday.

Vegas has a central transportation hub where all the car hire companies are located and the shuttles are outside the airport and run approx every 5 minutes. When we were in Vegas we caught the shuttle to our hotel and picked a car up from the Bellagio opposite. The public transport in Vegas is cheap and you can get a 24 hour ticket for $7 which covers the strip and residential areas so you can get up to Freemont Street and see the light show.

The only problem with a convertible apart from you being there in August when the weather will be very hot and you will feel very hot, it will also be very noisy on the Freeways.

Have a wonderful honeymoon whichever car you choose.

Biggest issue with the convertible will be luggage space (unless you want to drive around with some of your bags permanently on the back seat). I'd consider having one for the Pacific coast segment but otherwise I'd go with either of the other options.

You can manage without a car in Las Vegas and having one in San Francisco would be more of a pain than a convenience.

Definitely agree with you - it is easy to walk round San Fran (wonderful exercise as well!) plus it is great fun to ride the street cars. We managed very well without a car in both although we did hire a car for a day in Vegas to drive out to the dam as we also wanted to stop off at a cacti garden which is not on the scheduled tours.

Enjoy your honeymoon, we did a similar trip before we had our children and would love to do it again. When we first visited Florida we had a convertible and loved it

The other thing about San Francisco is that they have recently removed all the remaining FREE street parking, and the only way we can go around SF is to park in expensive $6 per hour garages, near our destination.
I would recommend a convertible from LA to SF and Napa driving on Highway 1 up the coast.
If you want a slightly cheaper and less pretentious view of Wine Country, go through Sonoma Valley, just West of Napa. There are some great spas and accommodation in the vineyards around Sebastapol and Santa Rosa in Russian River
