cash, $ travellers cheques, credit cards, switch?

I'm wondering what is the best way to bring and spend money. Cash?
Are travellers cheques easy to spend or will I have to find a bank? Which credit cards charge less commision/ transacion fee? Can you use switch/ maestro and how much does it cost? I'm sure my debit card has a transaction fee no matter how small the purchase. Any comments welcome.

If you want to take cash, I recommend you do so in travellers cheques. They are easy to spend and no, you do not need a bank to change them. Most places i.e. stores, restaurants and all the theme parks accept them and give you change in cash. And plus it is safer to carry than cash.

Do you have to show your passport when you spend travellers cheques. I don't particularly want to have to carry it around all the time....or are you meant to carry it anyway as a tourist? (sorry if this is a stupid question![msnembarrased])

No, you don't normally have to show your passport although you do in some places. Do you have a UK photo driving licence? If so, this will do for identification purposes if required (you should carry your driving licence and car rental documentation with you at all times when you're driving).

BTW, don't take GB£ travellers' cheques - take US$s. Don't take loads of $100 cheques as some small shops won't be able to change them - take plenty of $20 and $50 ones.

Take a small amount of US$s with you in cash, preferable in small denominations, ie $1 - $10s. You may need these at the airport for luggage trollies or for a porter or if you're driving on a toll road to your accommodation.

Nationwide is one of the few credit cards that don't charge commission fees on purchases abroad - the others charge up to 2.75%.

No you don't need your passport when you purchase with a TC. You just sign it as you would a cheque. The signature has to match the signature which you used at the time of purchasing the TCs. Hope this helps.

As above we were never asked for our passport when we used TC's, We also have a nationwide
Debit card and they dont charge when you draw local currency. So for us we take a bit in cash
a bit more in TC's and then just draw out money when we need to

    Hi
You don't need your passport - but I would recommend you take out photo id if you want to have a beer with your meal or to go into a club - I still am asked for id, even though I have a 16 year old daughter !

    Hi,
just to emphasise what blott has said. Always have your license with you whilst driving. I was pulled over a few years ago, didn't have my license and had to appear in court in downtown kissimmee - an experience but not one I would recommend to anyone else!

I have an old style driving licence with no photo- should I get it changed to a photo one? Is it easy to do?
Would there be any advantage getting a proof of age card for my son who is big for his age at 10? I think our local shop has forms for them.
