We like to book with Alamo as you can choose your own vehicle - even in Miami, and there is usually a good choice.

How does this work? Haven't used Alamo for about 10 years, have been using Dollar, but the last time I flew into Miami the Dollar cars were not as good as we have always got in Orlando. Thinking of the mid size SUV for 4 weeks or we may have a convertible for a week in the middle.

    Any advice appreciated[msnsmile]

When you go to the parking lot, all the cars are in rows with a sign above showing the category of car. All the cars have the keys in, so you just get in the car you like the look of (from the category you have booked) and drive off.

Ah Ellie that will be it. 5 of us and 4 cases and 2 teenagers who would have been persuaded to take a case! It made it loads quicker. Fingers crossed for a speedy exit from Miami

The rental car facility in Miami is huge so normally there is a wide range of vehicles to choose from. We did pick up a car quite late on evening recently, and there were not many to choose from in our category, but the guy walking around checking vehicles pointed to the next category up and told us to choose anything from it - which we did!

It is pretty much the same as in Orlando, you can take whichever vehicle appeals to you as the keys are in the cars. We prefer this as there can be a difference in the size of trunk and/or mileage etc.

Thanks, we were planning on staying over night in Miami and picking the car up the following morning, do you think there will be a good choice of cars at that time of day?

I would imagine that there will be plenty of cars available - if there aren't many in your category they usually offer you the option of taking one from the next category up - which is what happened to us.

You can also think of advance booking of the car as this way you can easily choose a rental car in your preferable category and that too at some discounted rate. By booking in advance you can search online for various good deals available from various car rental companies and then book the best deal as per your criteria.

Even if you advance book your car (as most of us do as it is horrendously expensive to rent a car when you arrive) there is no guarantee of how many cars there will be to choose from when you arrvie - no matter WHO you book with.

But as I have already said, if there aren't enough cars in your booked category you will be offered one in a higher category - and this is done in the garage with Alamo, not at the desk, which is why we prefer to go with Alamo. You don't have to go back into the terminal and re-do the paperwork.
