Very useful info. looks like the tie is the way to go. But where do you get the colour ones?

Anywhere like B&Q etc. our local Poundland often has them in assorted colours but theirs aren't as strong so we usually double those up if that is all we have.
We use the US recommended combination locks. Last trip two of our three cases had been opened by US security - note left inside the cases, but they had re-locked the cases, so we are happy to stick with those.

If you are stopping off en route for a few days remember to put something that can open the ties in an outside suitcase pocket.
We locked our cases with TSA apporved locks for the first time last trip - and guess what they were both inpected and a very ploite note left in the cases. Never locked them before so makes you wonder if they only check the ones with the locks or whether they just on't bother to leave a note if they check unlocked ones. Just did wnat to lose my new bedding set that I stuffed in my case - light but bulky. (looks great on my bed now and way cheaper than at home)
Locks or cable ties will not stop anybody gaining access to your suitcase. Nearly ALL cases can be opened with a pen and then resealed. You would have no idea it has been tampered with until you or cutoms open it. So i guess you should fit what ever you think is safest.

The link shows how easy it is for someone to open your case.
It is certainly food for thought.

You can now take a small pair of scissors in hand luggage - the blade has to be less than 4cm.
We buy our cable ties from Home Depot in Orlando as they have packets of strong ones in a variety of colours.
However, having seen the video it makes you wonder if it is worth bothering.
Has anyone used the telltags which are on utube?
These seem to offer more protection against your bag being opened.

Quite frankly, "security" wise, the only method is to carry anything of value in hand luggage......
We've only ever used cable ties as a method of ensuring zippers don't catch on something & undo themselves.
Wouldn't advise anyone to place anything of value (either real or sentimental) in hold luggage.
We have Samsonite cases, the ones with zips we use TSA padlocks, and the combination lock cases we use TSA lockable luggage straps, we have had our cases opened, but not every time, but always re locked with a note left inside.
Diane.
