It does seem fairly standard now for Virgin to ring a few days before the flight and offer you the chance to upgrade they phoned us in April and some of our friends who have also flown with them over the last few months.

I rang to try & book for October, as advertised in their flight sale Economy at £454 per person. I was quoted £3700? What do you make of that then? I nearly fell off my chair! Think she must have been booking me in First Class. [msneek]
I think I'll ring again & try to get someone else just to see what they come up with.

[msncry]No, I've rang again and there's no seats available for that price in the school holidays for October. Just have to try someone else who can maybe accommodate school teachers.

I think that Virgin's high price has put a lot of people of travelling with them in the current climate.

I have just returned from Gatwick and picked up my daughter after she travelled on the VS16.

She counted just under 100 people in economy on a 747. Her and her husband had 3 seats each and both children had 4 in the middle. Why buy premium when you can get a deal like this!

BA direct to Tampa seems to be cheaper for a lot of dates over Orlando. Tampa is a nice airport and we always found it quite child friendly. There are several car companies based in the airport - so no bus ride and it is an easy journey from and to the airport. Did wonder if BA are doing this deliberately now they have a daily flight to Tampa to try and raise its profile.

She was lucky, we travelled on the VS 16 on Friday which took off 3 houurs late (with no explanation as to why), we did have a few spare seats so spaced out a little but still around 350 (going out there were over 400 passenger plus crew). Some people opted to pay $86 each to travel on the early one once they got to checkin but it wasnt even an option when we asked on arrival (about 3pm)to find the delay. I wouldnt have paid the extra on principal though, why should they make extra money from us when the only reason we were asking to change was because they told us we were 3 hours late and we couldnt contact the person who was arriving to meet us till later so didnt know what other pick up he had.

I'm guessing that it's the day of travel that helped her as there have been other reports of half empty flights on Virgin.

I'll let her know how lucky she was.

Flythomascook had cheap flights for Sept 28 2012 (£319+60 tax+£38 baggage+17 meal) but they have added £100 to the price overnight. I'm gutted as we couldnt afford to book till this morning!
