It is with great sadness that I post the following email received today:

I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news but unfortunately Shirley passed away yesterday morning at 07:30
As you know she had been suffering from cancer but just 5-6 weeks ago the hospital had advised that the scan showed the chemotherapy had worked fantastically and although the cancer would return it would not normally return for 6 to 9 months
Unfortunately it has turned out to be so aggressive that it was back within 2 - 3 weeks and gave her no chance of survival
She was well enough to be at home until Saturday so the final onslaught was mercifully very short
She had been talking to the nurses at 07:00 yesterday but when they came back at 07:15 her breathing had become strained and they phoned me at 07:20 to tell me but not to rush because I wouldn't make it
I did rush and although I was there by 07:35 I was to late by a few minutes
She did at least die very peacefully and was not in any pain which, I guess, is all we can be thankful for and Shirley looked as if she was just asleep
