    Hand luggage ?

After 9/11 the airlines cracked down on what was permissable in hand luggage which meant that I could no longer spend the flight doing cross-stitch (needles, small scissors, etc). Although I no longer do cross stitch, my needles have become larger and I like to knit.

Does anyone know if they have relaxed the rules and whether or not I can take my knitting needles on board with me? I can only read and watch in-flight entertainment so much....

    Thanks in advance,
    Sarah

No You can't Sarah, much to my annoyance. A week before 9/11 I had a very productive flight and knitted a jacket for a friends baby which was due when we came home so I know it'a a good way to pass the time. I even asked about crochet hooks and they told me no last time (Dec) even though they are just the same as a ball point pen. You can now take small scissors on board with blades no longer tha 2" (I am sure that is the size). So it's Sudoko and music for me now.
I was looking at the knitting looms but they are a bit bulky and I'm not sure there's enough scope for me to warrant buying one, there's only so many hats, scarves and baby blankets you can make.

Yes unfortunately there have been so many cases of "nanny rage" onboard and crew must be protected at all costs from the "knit one, purl one brigade"

Suppose we could all start trying to knit with a couple of Biro pens which can be just as dangerous as knitting needles. It is annoying as I like to cross stitch and it was a good way to pass the hours.

You can take needles, the sewing ones, not the knitting ones and you can get a pendant which had a round blade inside with notches around it so that you can cut thread so you can do cross stitch, I did it last time out with Delta with no problem.

After all it would be quite a feat to stab someone with the tiny sewing needle surely.

When I asked at Gatwick last time Andrena they told me you still couldnt take sewing needles Andrena. I picked up a magazine that had some Christmas gift tags in Smiths at the airport but it didnt have any needles so I tried to buy a travel sewing kit but all the shops said they weren't allowed them because of the needles so I asked security . Perhaps Heathrow is operating a bit differently?

Also got the same answer when I flew last September that it was still not allowed.
