As long as your passport is still valid the day you arrive back in the UK you will be fine.

If she has a British passport or one from the list of other countries exempt from the 'six months remaining rule' she will be fine

Thanks for keeping me right.
If she hasn't completed her ESTA yet, as she is going to have to pay for it she could consider renewing her passport early (they will add up to 9 months remaining validity onto the new one so wont lose anything.
Her ESTA will only be valid until the expiry of her passport (if she has not been before and has to apply for it now) so if she wants to go again next year would have to pay again for ESTA.
