    when to book flights

    Hi

We are looking to book with Virgin from Manchester for mid November. The current sale only covers to March time. Will the next sale be around April? we have collected some miles so are looking to use 2000 miles per ticket

    Thanks

I would check regularly and buy when you see a price you are happy with

I agree with that but fares on the whole have rocketed over the last couple of years and over recent months in particular and are at levels where even sale rates are pretty pricey. There will be occasional sales between now and November and that's when you're going to get what little value there is now.

I'd probably re-phrase Shirley's advice by saying "wait until you see a price you're prepared to pay".

We were in exactly the same position as you last year. We were looking to go March 2011 and were looking to book July 2010 using miles plus money.

I watched the prices for a while and after deciding that no one knows what will happen with the prices, i just booked when i was happy with the price. I paid £386 per adult and used 2000 miles per ticket. I didn't really check that much after i had booked but i think i did well.

This was MAN - MCO with Virgin like yourself. Also, this was not booked in the sale.

    Hi

    Thanks for the advice

I have looked at the virgin website, for the dates we want we can get
MAN - MC0 for £485 which is including 2000 miles. I think this is way too expensive for November so will wait.

We could get the same dates from L Gatwick for £420 including 2000 miles, but the extra cost plus hassle of travelling from Yorkshire with two young kids puts me of

If we can get sub £400 flights we would snap them up straightaway, I think yoy got an excellent deal Garry
Will just keep looking everyday at the virgin website and see if we get lucky!

    Thanks everyone

I know you are more limited from Manchester, but November isn't a peak time, so I would wait.

When you use your virgin miles can you use them for any flight or only on certain dates? We tried to use miles when we booked last month but it didn't seem to want to let us use miles- now I am seeing you can use some towards each flight and I am kicking myself thinking we just didn't do it properly!! We had 9500 miles so could have used 3000 each towards our tickets.

The miles plus money option lets you use 2000 miles towards your ticket. The number of reward seat flights is limited on on any given day so it can be a case of trying as many options of dates and flights as possible to achieve the maximum saving. You dont earn any miles on the flights you take.
The last few times we have looked at them the saving has been around 340 per person so we haven't bothered but accumulated more towards a "free" flight at a later date.
