Continental have brought forward the flight time of my return flight from Newark to Edinburgh. The flight I am booked on returning from MCO arrives in Newark 10 mins after the Edinburgh flight departs, which means I will mis the connecting return flight.
I can change my flights FOC, but the earlier flight leaving MCO to Newark only gives me 1 hr 40 mins. Is this enough time to catch my connecting flight?
It should be. but we try and allow at least 2 hours in between. It will depend on what time of year you are travelling, As New York is prone to windy weather and delays, as well as the usual summer florida season. We have always connected in New York, and nearly missed the connection once when we landed 10 mins after the bristol flight was due out, but we ran our legs off and just about made it as that was slightly delayed. This is way we try to leave at least 2 hours in between. which means our connecting times are about 3 hours in between, but we have made it with less time, if there is no delays. Our flight home this Jan is connecting in new york onward to heathrow is 3.46hrs which we feel is adequate at this time of year.

Just noticed that the earlier flight out of Orlando to Newark has the same flight number as the Newark to Edinburgh flight. So it is a continuous flight with only a change of planes at Newark. Would I be right in thinking that if the flight out of Orlando was delayed, the connecting flight to Edinburgh would be held as it is the same flight number?
AA have changed my flights and are only allowing me 45 minutes for a connection at JFK - they must think it is possible. So looks like you have plenty of time at Newark

45 mins at JFK - you may have trouble! Perhaps give the airline a call, even for peace of mind.
although the flight might have the same number they are not the same plane and no if one part of the flight is delayed the other one will go on time.
A number of people we know who thought the same have missed the connection over the years when they named the 76 flight from Orlando to Bristol.

I can confirm what Ceri has written concerning the 'confusion' over a flight that appears to have a continuous flight number I too used the 76 Orlando to Bristol flight but it went via Newark and was two distinct flights.
The benefit of the return flights is that there is no luggage or officialdom to be dealt with and sometimes you may find your outward flight gate is very close to the gate you arrive at - having said that it can also be some very long distance and like Ceri I have had to do a few sprints in my time.

Assuming that's on the inbound journey, it is doable but tight for both passengers and their checked bags. AA have a dedicated terminal at JFK and you can have a long walk to the International gates but if you're in on time you should be OK.
Looks like I will have enough time as long as the inbound flight to Newark is not delayed. This fight will get dock at terminal B or C, and my departing flight leaves from terminal C (I think).
All domestic flights from Orlando to newark will land at terminal C, all international flights to newark land at terminal B, and outgoing flights from newark to orlando will go from terminal C.
Unless anything has changed in the last week or two.
The one change that has happened this year in Orlando for Continental is that all flights now land in terminal B in Orlando and not terminal A anymore, this changed in the summer 2010
