Hi all just reading about ESTA there is a mention of biometric and digital passports my wife and i have passports which run until 2013 do i need to change them to these bio/digital ones now for travel dates in 2011 we are about to renew our 12year old sons passport this month will it automatically be one of these new types.

Your old passports should be ok.
Stuart's passport also expires in 2013 and he has no problems getting in and our of America - our last visit was in September.
Your sons will be the new ones and when yours are renewed will be but until then you are fine to use the old ones.

We use the old type (ours run out Aug 2012) and have only recently returned and no problems.

Ours run out in 2015 and are the non biometric ones. You will have no problems with your passports.
Mine isnt a chipped passport but my boyfriends is. when we travelled to florida in August everything was fine, but on the arrival back into manchester we were seperated coming through border control as there is a new self service entry port for those with chipped passports - they literally scan themselves in. i had to wait in the huge line to be manually granted entry for over an hour on my own
This might be worth preparing for if your children have the chipped passports and you dont. Though im sure there was an age limit for self entry for situations like this, take careful note on the signs as one man had went to the chipped line and because a member of his party didnt have the correct passport the entire party were sent to the back of the queue.
