That's good to know pam, my uncle has to travel down from Thetford to Gosport on Wednesday and I didn't know what the situation was like up there.
Our snow has all gone now, we have had heavy rain since 11 am this morning [xmas1]

We last had snow on Saturday afternoon so expected this morning for the roads to have been dealt with and hopefully the pavements but took our car out this morning to go to the station and it was -9C. The roads have still not been gritted nor have the pavements. Guess the roads budget will not have to cover the cost of broken bones from those walking and falling on the ice so they are not worried. Andrew's girlfriend is flying in from Moscow (hopefully) on Thursday and out there they are falling about laughing about how we have ground to a halt again over such a small amount of snow.

A work colleague of mine who will also be in the UK over Christmas)called Alamo today to ask about the possibility of winter tyres on the car he will be renting. They didn't have a clue what he was talking about. I am amazed how backwards the UK is in this respect - winter tyres are hugely beneficial in temps lower than 7c, not just in snow and ice.
Here in Bavaria it has always been recommended to use winter tyres, and almost everyone has both summer and winter tryes for their vehicle. This year it is finally compulsory, under pain of on-the-spot fine and points on your licence.
We will be driving to UK on Wednesday, so it'll be interesting to compare how Germany, France and UK are faring.

Its not a case of being backward Keith, just that most people are too tight to buy tyres full stop let alone buying a second set for the winter. My Merc gets around just fine on its winter tyres

We are down in Worthing in Sussex and it's pouring with rain. Picking my 92 year old mother up on Wednesday and will be driving up to Scarborough in North Yorkshire for Christmas. Not looking forward to the journey!
Really thick here in Cheam and settling again on top of the last lot from Friday & Saturday
We now have 8 inches..having to keep digging Micky mouse out the snow..everyone is at work and school so the roads are OK..
