    Lyn's Report Part 6

Wednesday - Well guess what, the launch postponed again, decided to drive over to Blue Spring, no manatees it is still too warm. There were however lots of swimmers in the spring including two scuba divers down in the vent hole. We did see two different woodpeckers an alligator, an otter and several turtles. The weather was lovely, had a really nice day.
Thursday – Well launch postponed yet again, because of the weather this time. Did a bit of shopping a bit of sitting by the pool and a bit of walking, all whilst trying to avoid the showers.
Friday – The launch is postponed yet again, this time because of a hydrogen leak. Will now not go until at least Monday, too late for us, oh well. We decided instead to go to Sea World, it is very handy having an annual pass as you can just go for a couple of hours with no parking charge (which has just gone up to $14). There has been a cool wind today and it was very funny seeing people in coats and even gloves, we were still in t shirts. When we returned to the villa the ibis were on the lake so went out to feed them, there were also some ducks, who are a bit more wary and don’t come to feed until they are really sure of you. The ibis however will come right up to your feet and eat and eat. Well off to Fort Myers Beach tomorrow, a holiday within a holiday, not sure of the internet connection down there so might not be able to report till I get back.

Lyn, great reports. Just a word of caution. I have been given to understand that it 'an offence' to feed any wildlife in Florida. Hope you don't mind me telling you.[msnembarrased]

I know many people come to Dartmoor and think they are doing the ponies a favour by feeding them which of course they should not be doing and some of the food they give the ponies is actually harmful for them.

Sorry you are going to miss the launch - if it ever happens. Enjoy the rest of your visit and look forward to the next report.

We stayed nearby to where Lyn is in April. We wondered why we had so many birds heading towards our pool area at certain times of the day. We noticed a large bowl on the walkway between the houses, later someone from across the road filled it with seed.

Watching the animal rescue programmes on cable it's an offence to entrap wildlife to keep as pets. In Miami someone had cut the feathers so that the bird could not fly away. Our friends live in Poincianna and have a large garden where Sandhill Cranes and wild turkeys roam free. They feed them seed as well.

I suppose the problem arises when the animals become dependant on humans feeding them and forget their wild ways of foraging for food.

IT is actually an offence with huge fines to feed any wildlife. $10K for 'gators
IF you feed the ibis and cranes, its great the way they come up to you, but when you are not there, they come and peck the pool cage netting of the home you stayed at and cause vast expense [my last lot of ruined netting was over $300 ] and lets insects into the pool area................
The lake has enough natural food for them, and also, whilst they are on the water, they are safe from prowling / sliding predators.

The launch has been put back until the end of November at the earliest due to the hydrogen leak so we wont see it as we come back on 19th November.

Weather according to TV is very cold - 65 degrees today - quite pleaseant to us but it going to start warming up from Monday rising back up to 80 by Friday.

[/quote]It is illegal to feed wildlife, including sand hill cranes. http://myfwc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/my...GlsbCBjcmFuZXM

Sand hill cranes in particular do considerable damage to pool net screens if food is no longer forthcoming as Susan J hsd said.

To report anyone feeding wildlife, ring 1-888-404-FWCC (3922).
