    In the 1400's a law was set forth in England that a man was allowed to beat his wife with a stick no thicker than his thumb.

    I didn't try I knew I couldn't. My daughter however can still suck her toe (I know why would you want to) and she is 29 next month.

    I'm fairly sure that the 'p and q' one is wrong as well.

    It really comes from the old print trade when pages where typeset with single characters taken from a tray.

    These were blocked and set in reverse so that the page would print correctly.

    If you were a trainee typesetter then you needed to 'mind your p and q' because it was easy to get these wrong.
