    Cake?

Hi just booked a room at the yacht club for our celebration diner and have agreed from them to make us a cake. I have emailed them to ask for it to be a sponge cake as neither my wife and I like fruit cake. My question is what kind of cake do the americians normally have on celebrations, you know like our wedding cakes are traditional fruit cakes but what are theirs ? [?]

If you watch Ace of Cakes on Good Food channel, one of the favourites seems to be a red velvet cake, but I think anything goes, here is a list of the flavours of cakes I found the website :

    almond
    almond amaretto cream
    apples and cinnamon*
    banana caramel
    bananas foster
    beurre noisette
    black forest
    blackberry sourcream
    blueberry muffin*
    brownie*
    butterscotch walnut
    cardamom and pistachio*
    caribbean black cake*
    carrot
    cherry and almond
    chocolate
    chocolate cherry
    chocolate chip muffin*
    chocolate espresso
    chocolate mint
    chocolate orange
    chocolate raspberry
    curry caramel
    dulce de leche
    egg nog
    ginger and green tea
    italian orange and vanilla
    lemon
    lemon curd and berries
    lemon poppyseed
    marble
    mudslide
    orange and ginger
    peaches and cream
    peanut butter and jelly
    peanut butter cup
    pecan pie
    pineapple coconut
    pumpkin and cinnamon
    pumpkin chocolate chip*
    red velvet
    strawberry shortcake
    tiramisu
    white
    white chocolate raspberry

Don't think rich fruit cakes are as popular in the States as here so you should be fine.

The closest to our plain sponge is "yellow" cake. We find that the cream they often use on their cakes is too sickly. Best though is Betty Crocker chocolate fudge buttercream.

The 'icing' will be soft and very sweet. The cake will be.... regular cake. American cake isn't as good as European cake.

Kitch50 thank you for the list, makes me more confused than before and worried what they will choose for me. I'm sure it will be good.

Mizzy if my cake looks as good as that I'd be a happy man.

They have said they will make it beach themed as our renewals will be on the beach. Fingers crossed.

I saw this lovely cake in Publix when over in Rotonda a few weeks ago. Could be suitable for your renewals on the beach!
