You can. But you would be better off using mobiles. As with the most common walkie talkies, they are run on a much used frequency, and have a lot of traffic on them, on virutally all stations. the better wider range ones, are used with licence, they are much better. although yes with like any mobile you may not hear it ring etc. if you have it in your bag. We have walkie talkies although we do use mobiles a lot more.
We bought walkie talkies in Wal Mart some years back, they were OK but lots of people using the same frequencies. Not used them for a while as there are only the two of us now and we tend to stay together. As lots of people now use mobiles there may not be the same problem with the frequency usage. It would be expensive to use your British mobile in the parks.

Thanks - will look into purchasing a US PAYG - will I have to buy a phone too - or can I just put a US sim card in my UK phone?
Thanks

Most of the time. you can get a PAYG phone for about $20 and have virtually $20 of call time on it. so the phone is free. Just have a look in the local walmart electronics section
We bought our kids PAYG 'phones in Walmart for about $14 and there was $15 worth of minutes on it so it was a great bargain. We have had our original ones for a few years and we just add minutes when we go out - often they change the number, but it is no great deal as we just given each other the new number and we don't expect anyone else to need to call us on them, it is just for us to keep in touch with each other when we are out and about.

we bought walkie talkies about 8 years ago - and the first time my younger son used his - we had arranged to meet at the Walmart on the 192. We tried to contact them - they had been at Disney - but there were so many people on the same frequency - it was all a bit of a jumble. ....and then I heard this voive saying - I want my MUMMY!!! It could only have been my (then) 21 year old son! We couldn't do anything but laugh! But everyone else cleared the frequency until he said ' where are you, Mum ?- we've been waiting at Walmart for ages and I need a drink!' Kept our heads down as we went in to Walmart, in case anyone was looking at us!
Don't think we've used them since - they're in my Owner's cupboard[msnembarrased]
