I would "go for it" at the theme parks - a lot of the big rides have separate queues (lines) for single riders and so you'll get on the rides with far less wait time

If Kennedy is the only day for which you will need a car then personally it might be worth just booking a coach, you can then relax without having to worry about driving, navigating etc on your own and if you book through someone like Virgin or Keith Prowse then you can get a combined entry and coach for a reasonable price.

"As I recall, most of the rides are cars, where groups of people sit. I'd feel really awkward if I was the odd one each time."

This can have the advantage that if you use the single riders queue you can get onto a lot more rides and most people are used to the car being filled up with extras.

Another idea on the coach trip if you haven't done so before how about a day trip to the Everglades, it's quite a long day but my brother did it on his own a couple of years ago and enjoyed it, if you are on a coach it can make the day more enjoyable if you are on your own as you will soon get chatting to somebody else on the coach . As you say crowds can be the lonliest place if you don't know anybody.

    Separate single riders' queues? [msnoo]

They certainly weren't around when I last went... I think... I was too busy being part of a group!

Perhaps I will try them in that case.

I think what I'll do is rent a car for a week or so. One of the days in this week will be used to visit the Kennedy Space Centre, and I'll use the other days to tour around the area looking for picturesque spots like perhaps the Everglades. I should probably use the rental car to get to Daytona too, as it's pretty far away. Does that sound sensible?

Oh boy, this trip is going to be unforgettable!

    Another quick question: *everybody groans*
Has anyone successfully used their AA cards to get a discount at Hertz rent-a-car? The AA website says the discount is offered, but it says to show your AA card upon arrival, and I'm a little dubious about it not being recognised.

If you contact the AA they can send you a temporary AAA card which has the same effect but is more recognised by the US. You will probably find it cheaper to organise a car before you go as the US prices tend to be more expensive by the time they've added all the extras on.

As you are travelling alone you could make it an overnight to Kennedy and Daytona otherwise you are doing almost the same drive twice, Whereas if you drove up to Daytona one day and had a look around and found a cheap motel or something it would probably only cost you $34-$40 for the night and then you can call in at Kennedy on the wway back the next day.

    Tony,

When will you be visiting? I travel out to Orlando most of my time alone and now have many friends out there. I have no problems in the parks and certainly don't 'blush' whilst waiting in line.

In fact, you find a lot of single riders in line on most rides as the people their with are a little scared to do the ride[msnscared]

Anyway, I'll be there from Feb 11th and will be waiting for my friends to arrive from NY on the 14th, so if your about then give me a shout and maybe we could head out for a beer.

    Matt

PS. Disney have driving ranges but I don't know what they're like as I've never been, maybe they will have more details on their web site.

    Telephone AA - check [msnwink]

Matt, thanks for the offer, but I'm going to be there from the 21st Jan to the 4th Feb, so we'll miss each other.

I think I may just have to do the theme parks again... you guys have convinced me.

    Ooh, roll on next week!

You can certainly hire clubs from most of the clubs - certainly Southern Dunes and Highlands Reserve. But I think you will need a car to get to them!

In February Universal will be having Mardi Gras and featuring lots of bands - might be worth a whirl?

We did a trip to Mount Dora (via the Mission Inn golf club!) over Christmas and I would recommend this - do take the boat ride at 5.00pm which takes you round the lakes. If I could ever get the picture thing on here to work I would post some pics!
