Whilst i see all the important reasons the owners have listed about the legal requirements, as a regular renter, I would think it is only polite to let the owner know, it is their house after all. The private rental market is all about developing trust between the owner and the renter and this has to work both ways. Transparancy is important for all.

We rented a villa a couple of years ago and my wife's sister and her husband came down from calafornia to stay with us for a few days, we kept the owner informed (before we left the uk) and it was no problem at all, we offered to pay extra but the owner didn't want us to.

FraserLynn sounds just the sort of guest that most owners love to have in their homes. Most owner do not mind people having guests just as long as they know. We had a couple some time ago, who wanted a two month rental, just the two of us they said and then they had family down each week, so after three weeks when our neighbours informed us of what was going on, we informed them that we would not be refunding their Security Deposit as they had broken their agreement. They were not pleased and I was quite pleased that I had taken a larger than usual deposit, as I had a feeling about them.
We owners do not like to have to do this, but when guests try to put one over on us then we have to have some way of dealing with it.
So to people like FraserLynn, thank you for being honest and above board, we love your type of guest in our homes.

Honesty is the best policy in all cases. If they say no, they say no as you should really have mentioned this when you booked.
