You would need to apply for a B1/B2 visa which gives you 180 days. They need to know what your connection is to both USA - are you a vacation home owner - your connection and proof that you intend UK to be your main place of residence. If you go onto the US Embassy Website it will give you details of the process etc.

Lynn - we have B1/B2 visas, they last for ten years. The US Emabassy who will interview you are concerned with a) are you likely to find employment in the US b) are you intending to study in the US c) are you likely to overstay the 180 days allowed under the B1/B2 Visa system.
If you can provide sufficient paper evidence of UK employment (current payslips etc), UK homeownership (mortgage papers and/or current Council Tax papers), evidence of grandchildren etc etc then you should get a Visa for 180 day stays per year.

We filled the forms in on line and then got an appointment in the Belfast Embassy. We flew over from Glasgow for the day, attended the interview - which took a couple of hours - went for a meal and a drink after , then flew back to Glasgow. Our Passports arrived back in the mail the very next morning with our new visas in! Great service and nice lady who was interviewing.
