Yes, a green card gives you permanent residency, so no need for a visa or any other criteria. You can live here and retire and children can stay here as long as they want. Generally, the only ways to lose a green card are to commit a serious crime, leave the US for to long or to vote. With a green card after a few years (5 in our case) you can get citizenship.

If you qualify for a green card does that mean you can stay as long as you want even into retirement and does it mean that your children can stay after they are 21?

As far as I know you can keep renewing a green card..I did have one person in one of the forums have his refused..he did not say why could be drug related..hubby is going for his citizenship next year..I'm not fussed because I want to move on in the next 10 years or so..hubby needs to for work..it will be easier for him to move country and still work in the US for a while..once I leave I have no real plans to come back..its not that I don't like it here..but I also have no plans to visit the UK again..its just about moving on and seeing what the next country has..

I felt really sorry for the couple with the ice cream parlour as they seemed to be doing well. If they hadn't opened the 2nd shop they would be employing less US citizens but may have more money in the bank so may have not had a problem with their visa .

First couple were dreadful. We laughed when she said about her husband not saying much because he hadn't said much all the way through! She was completely OTT

I also found the first couple obnoxious, but did feel sorry for the home cinema couple (surely they checked the books over first before they bought!!!) the ice cream parlour couple, was eye opening to think they had so much trouble and were doing so well and the English Tea rooms - were basically 'taking the michael' out of the Americans, but it worked for them.

I was shocked to hear that at the age of 21, children had to go home (that must tear families apart) and also that lady on the radio who had lived there for years yet she may have her visa rejected, scary.

I love America and enjoy visiting but could not cope with the stress of applying for visas etc to live there. Rainy England wil have to do.... [confused]

The physical card has to be renewed every 10 years, but the status itself is not renewed - it's "permanent residency". The card renewal process is a hassle, not US bureaucracy at its finest. (You cannot apply more than 6 months before the card expires, and guess how long it takes to process the application. 9 months if you are lucky.) I suspect that they take the opportunity to examine whether you are still entitled to the status - as already mentioned, there are some circumstances in which you can lose the status.
