    Advice for stranded in NY

Not Florida related but any advice would be appreciated.
Young couple booked to fly back with Continental last Thursday 15th. The internal flight went from Vegas to New York no problem, but no onward flight. Yesterday they were told, even if the flight ban were lifted the earliest they would be able to fly is the 26th next Monday. Continental have said they are not entitled to anything including hotels, so first question any ideas on compensation (they are now getting short of funds). The next question, they are staying near Newark airport and its quiet expensive plus not a lot to do.
If they are going to be in NY another week they want to move closer in so they have something to do any one any ideas on cheaper places to stay closer to the centre.

There is a Consulate helpline number

    Travel Summary

•The British Consulates in the US have activated a dedicated call centre for British Nationals affected by the Icelandic volcano eruption through the cancellation of flights and the closure of European airports. The telephone number is 1-888-854-3574 (or 1-888-UK-HELP-4ME).

Which may be able to assist them if they are stuck and short of funds.

If they look for one of the chain hotels they may be able to find something affordable and perhaps get one of their family to book online with credit card if they are running out of money?

The trouble is with going too far is thay also need to get back to the airport when flights are available so need to have contact number to keep updated of changes.

My daughter used the hostel near Central Park a few years ago and said it wouldnt be her first choice to stay but if she were desperate it would be ok.

Booking accommodation from tonight until Friday morning, the Pod Hotel Manhattan is showing at £74.11 per night. This is the cheapest in Manhattan and looking at the traveller's review on [an online review website], it seems pretty good. If they decide they can't afford this, they can stay at the Econolodge at Newark Airport for £35.75 per night. [/quote]They are very good rates for New York which is very expensive these days. I'd be surprised if there's much better about at the moment.
