    Online check in

    Hi
Does anyone know if you can do online check in with American Airlines.
I was under the impression you couldn't after looking at the AA website. However I was reading another well known forum (not as good as this one) where somebody had posted the same question and some people said they had and some said you couldn't.
We are flying on Boxing day morning Lhr-Mia-Mco so it would be nice if we could get to the airport a bit later.

Not for the outbound international flight but you can for the return. Makes no sense, but that's the rule.

Thanks for confirming that I thought I had read it somewhere but couldn't find it when I looked again.[msneek]
Being able to check in online for the return flight will be useful though.

Apologies, but I think I've mixed online with self-service check in. [msnembarrased]

Actually, you can't do online check in in either direction but you can do the self-service check in on the return.

When we flew with Delta recently we could do online check in from the UK but not when we returned. We were told that US airlines do not intend to introduce it either.

When we flew from Stansted we asked why you could not book in on line like you can with BA and Virgin as it saves time and means far less standing in a queue. The answer did not go down well with me. I was told that it was because we could be terrorists if we booked in on line for an intenational flight. How this makes a difference the AA clerk did not know but cited the case of the shoe bomber. Was just about to make a rude comment when Stuart kicked me to be quiet as he wanted to travel not get kicked off the flight.

You can check in for internal flights online. Maybe they don't get terrorists on domestic flights then [stupid1]

The self-service check-in is pretty good and avoids the queues. To be fair to AA, they do allow seat selection at time of booking so there isn't the same urgency to check in online to get the seat you want. I have 4 transatlantic returns booked with them at the moment and I know exactly where I will be sitting. You can't do that on Virgin & BA.

I flew home from California with AA a couple of weeks ago. I arrived at the airport just over an hour before departure, used the self service check-in and was airside within 10 minutes.

Chosing your seat at time of booking is definitely an advantage with AA over BA (who used to do this) and Virgin. However, we ended up having to get to Stansted earlier than we would have with on-line check in and bag drop.

Shirley your comment is along the lines I was going to ask the AA agent when I was kicked by Stuart and told to shut up.
