    Flying into Miami

We have left it late this year but finally decided we are coming to Orlando ideally at the end of August. The prices for flights look horrendous at the moment but have found some reasonable ones flying with Virgin direct into Miami.

Has anyone done this and how much hassle is it to get to and from Miami to Orlando.

    Any information is appreciated

We have flown into Miami twice. The journey up to Orlando is very straight forward and fairly well signposted out of the airport

If you can wait until 1 September, American Airlines will take you to Miami from Heathrow and then on to Orlando by 5.30 pm. Return fare around £460.

Not worth the hassle and drive at that price.

Always do it this way and although a long drive it really doesn't bother us. We are on H27 so basically one road all the way up. You could take the turnpike of even I 95 then SR60.

If you cannot wait until 1st September then it is a straightforward drive either using the Turnpike or the US27, depending on whether you like toll roads or prefer to see some of Florida. I am aware there are stretches going past the sugar cane farms which are pretty desolate but the passengers can play spot the gator, turtle etc. From May Miami airport are opening the new Rental Car Service garage so all car hire companies will be under one roof and much closer to the airport than now. It is a new facility which will eventually include all other forms of transportation. It is also very near to the exit for the US27.

The Florida Turnpike is a good road, and once past the busy areas of Miami and Fort Lauderdale it is a quick and easy route to Orlando. We don't find it a hassle at all. There are service areas every 40 miles if you want to get out and stretch your legs, and you can get a meal or drink here, too.

Hope you have a great time!

We drove the other way, orlando to miami last year. the journey was easy and it didn't seem that long as the roads are traffic free and straight but it was about 4 hours with an half an hour stop off.

Thank you all for the great information. I will certainly be considering this route when making my booking this weekend. The other alternative was to fly to Philly then Orlando with Continental so a double check on the prices and I don't think in time wise there is much difference even with the 4 hour drive.

Another consideration is that the car rental sites are not on airport in Miami as they are Orlando or Sanford - so it is a(dedicated) bus ride with bags to and from rental depot. Not too much of a problem except adding more time.

There are plenty of indirect flights that get you to Orlando early evening and probably cheaper than Virgin to Miami.

P.S. whilst the journey to Orlando is straight forward on the Turnpike, I personally hate driving in Miami.

We are visiting Florida for the 5th time next month and each time have flown into Miami and driven up to Orlando.

We try to do a week in Orlando followed by a week or so travelling down the Gulf coast and stopping off at different place before flying out of Miami. Last trip we did St Pete's beach, and Naples. Previously we've stopped off at Tampa (to do Busch), Sarasota and Naples.

But I can understand the drive could be a drag for someone who is only going to be in Orlando for their whole trip.

Miami roads are busy but we usually just get straight out of Miami ASAP on arrival and don't hang around.

You just have to do whats best for you.

    Have a good trip

    Nadine
