can i ask ? when are the english schools summer hols? and do english schools have hols in october? thinking well a head and trying to organise a holiday for three families together, one with a child not yet at school so they are not sure holiday dates[msnembarrased]!!! hope it will all be worth it[msnsmile2]

Half term in October is 25th to 29th October in this neck of the woods(manchester). i think that most of the others will be around that time
Summer hols in manchester start 16th july until 2nd sept but other authorities definitely have different start dates eg stockport does not close until 30th july
In the south the summer holidays start on the 23rd July and they go back on the 6th September, October holidays are the same as Albert's.

In Essex, they start on 23rd July and go back on 2nd or 3rd, depending on non pupil days and October same as above

You should also take into account the Scottish and Irish holidays and the private schools if you are looking to avoid the crowds and higher prices.
I wouldn't look to travel from late June to the last week or so of August, also avoid the last two weeks of October. Travelling mid week at the very end of October is usually ok.
There is also a weeks holiday at the end of May, though due to exams, this tends not to be so popular for long haul travel

Hi I know you say the child is not at school yet so the family don't know the dates but they could look on the prospective school website or contact their Local Education Authority to find out the dates - that may help your decisions.
