    Tipping

Sorry I know this has been asked many times before, but couldn't find a recent post. We are taking a FairFx card loaded with our dollars (and $500 cash), firstly what is acceptable as a tipping amount? Is it still 10 - 20% depending on service, and is it ok to add it to the bill, i.e the bill is $50 dollars and you ask them to make it up to $57? It's only so we know if to take more than $500 in cash. Thanks!

When you pay with a card you have to sign the receipt. Above the signature line are lines to add the tip and the total you want them to charge. Or you can leave your tip in cash. Either way is fine.

    We tip 18 to 20%, but it's a personal thing I guess.

The system is far more transparent than in this country where you are never sure whether the proprietor takes a cut-I've never had any qualms at leaving a tip on the card in the US

We also tend to tip 18 - 20% although I might leave more if the service is exceptional.

Many restaurants now include a list of tip amounts on the bill. It's not uncommon to see amounts for 15%, 18% and 20% shown so that you do not need to work it out.

If it is shown you may think it's wrong because the 20% amount is clearly not a fifth of the total. It's because the tip amount is calculated on items purchased BEFORE they add tax at the end.

When were out in Florida in October we were a party of 8 but needed 2 seperate bills for each family.

This was never a problem, but as we were still technically a part of 8 everywhere we ate always added the 18% automatic gratuity that they add to parties of 6 or 8 people.

I must say the service would have to be exceptional for me to tip 20% and I can't envisage a level of attention that would justify me ever paying more.

I know it's an old chestnut on here but I simply don't understand why the tip is assessed on how much the bill comes to, thereby penalising the highest spending customers. The cost bears no relationship to the service required, especially where drinks are concerned.

I usually work on 10-15% but will occasionally go above that if it's out of the ordinary.

When your in another country, in general, I tend to go with local custom. Local custom in the U.S. is 15 - 20% anything less is a way of saying you did not do an accepable job.

From a purely personal point of view my wife has an unusual allergy and needs all her food to be checked. Depending on the way this is handled we will often tip more than 20%.

I've never had it turned down so far![msnwink]
