We did go back as we've been before (Chevys) and the service has been good then. I think being a server was just not for this person [msnwink].

If we'd not been before and known it was usually very good then I very much doubt we'd have gone back though.

We leave tips if we get good service and a polite waiter or waitress ,And if they have not been nice and take us for granted we do not leave anything .
It is same here in UK we get bad service the worst ones seem to be the 2 for 1 places they do not get much wages and only doing it for holiday money or waiting on to make pin money as one told us once .

I know this has been said before, but even in the same establishment, spending $10 a head on a burger and a beer or $50 a head on a good steak and expensive wine, doesn't involve much extra work for the server.

    Yet for 6 people a 20% tip means $12 or $60!

I tip very generously (if I've had good service)and I want to come back - they remember. There's a waiter in Key W Kools who recognised me two years later and gave me free martinis all night on my return trip.

This then got him a bigger tip again, so now I'm not sure I can afford to go back.

We have been going for 18 years now and always leave 20% if service is good [ except for our first visit when we didnt know the tipping policy, the waitress turned really frosty after we left around 10%]

One thing I didnt realise is that the 20% should be calculated on the bill BEFORE tax not after I have never heard of this.

My son works in the hotel trade here in the U.k and he says his staff would be rich if the 20% policy was adopted here , our average bill for 5 is usually around $80 to $90 for which we leave $20 that equates to around 14GBP times that by around 10 tables a night thats a whopping 140.00GBP or $200.

A friend of mine has a daughter who stays in Florida , she says she earned more as a waitress than she did working as a nurse she said on a good night she earned $250 in tips a bad night around $100......
One thing that drove my son mad the last time we were out there was we were in TGI Fridays on the 192 and when the waitress gave us the bill she inserted a photo of her 2 babies with a god bless you sign underneith.
My son was livid and said if she was one of his staff she would have been dismisssed for emotional blackmail.

I tip more for breakfast..mostly because its a cheap meal and the girls work hard..no way could I give 20% every time I eat out..I find the cheaper the meal the more I tip..the girls in our local Friendly's get a 50% tip because the breakfast is only $2.99..I could never just leave a coin tip on the table for that like a lot do..I put away all my $1 bills for tipping..it does make the meal seem cheaper if you have the tip aready

I also don't leave a tip if someone has a picture of their kids on the bill plate...I also don't go there again
If a place has a min tip say of 15%...then no matter how good the service that is what I leave..or a bit less if the service was bad..

We tip 20% or more in Key West - purely because the cost of living is very expensive there.

I think generally 18-20% is the expected tip for godd service nowadays in the States.

We tend to tip 15% as standard and 20% if the service is really good.
