    pool heating: gas contra electric

We have booked a villa with a gas heated pool. Can someone explain the pros and cons of gas heating versus electric heating? We are going in February.
    Thanks, Renée

If I am correct, gas heating heats the water as if it were a kettle on a stove, electric heating works by taking the temperature out of the surrounding atmosphere, if it's cold outside, gas heaters are more efficient.

Does gas heat quicker than electric? And seeing that in Feb it can be colder outside, does it mean that a gasheater is more efficient for us as guests?

Generally gas does heat the pool up quicker and works even at colder temperatures. However, if it gets really cold for a day, which on the odd occasion does happen, even gas heating will struggle to maintain say a 85 degree pool temperature.

Yes, gas pool heating is quick in heating up (there's an awful lot of water to heat up!) and yes, when it's colder, a gas heater can be more efficient in those circumstances as it works whatever the weather.

If your pool has a blanket though (usually on a roller) or other form of heat retention device, you'll find that the pool stays warmer longer. Make sure you use it when you're not using the pool so you can enjoy the pool heating for longer when you are using it.

Renee I'm sure as a guest your priority is to have a nice warm pool regarless of how it is heated. You can acieve this by ensuring you keep it covered whenever you are not using the pool, through the day and most definately at night.

We have a pool at home (and for our camping) and also a cover. So we are well aware of the importance of that cover. Not only do we not want to waste any energy, we also want to ensure that our pool stays warm! [msnsmile2][msncool] The pool in "our" villa also has a cover, at least, I saw one on a photo.
Seems that we are lucky that "our" pool is gas heated.
    Thanks for your replies!

    Question:

If the pool is not being used one day but it is a hot day, is it best to still put the cover on or let the hot day do the work on the pool temperature??

[/quote]I would leave the cover on but it depends on many variables and personal preference. We leave the cover on at all times apart from when using the pool, that way we don't need to remember to put the cover back on.

You are best off leaving the cover on. Even if it is a hot day, the pool will still loose heat.
