I don't fly Continental but I thought there had recently been a change and that only 1 checked bag was free now?

Sorry to add more confusion but a call to Continental might clarify.

The website seems pretty clear to me - check the matrix

    http://www.continental.com/web/en-US...age/check.aspx

You are allowed two pieces of checked baggage with a maximum weight of 50 pounds (23 kg) and a maximum outside dimension of 62 inches (157 cm).

Travel from Europe to USA, first bag free, 2nd bag $45 if you check in online, $50 if you check in at the airport. There are some exemptions to these fees for certain passengers:

    Silver Elite members*
    Platinum and Gold Elite customers*
    First Class customers**
    BusinessFirst customers**
Continental Airlines Chase primary cardmembers will have their first checked-bag fees automatically waived
Continental Airlines Presidential Plus primary cardmembers will have their first and second checked-bag fees automatically waived
Any customer traveling on full fare economy class (Y) tickets
    Active U.S. military personnel+
U.S. military dependents traveling with U.S. military personnel on personal travel++
U.S. military dependents traveling on official business (with documentation)

Just for future reference, is there a charge for the second checked bag? It looks to me from Keith's post that the answer is 'Yes'.

I'd say generally yes, with exceptions for some routes, some classes, and some passenger types.

Is the charge for the second bag for both the outbound and the inbound flight? I would just want a second case on the inbound journey

Looks like it - you'd have to purchase the bag in the US because there's be a charge from the UK even though it might be empty (unless you could fit it inside your outbound bags).
