    Laptops and Office 2007 applications

I know this is TOTALLY off topic but I am confused about Office Home and Student 2007 - we have just bought a new laptop which we need to install Office on before we go to Orlando in October (my son has to do college coursework while we are away or I wouldn't be taking it) and my brother has reliably[?] informed me that Office 2007 is like norton and you only have the license for 365 days and then you have to buy it again (I thought this was a rip off when we first bought norton and have never used it again). We have office 2003 on our desktop - very old desktop - (one license only) and have never had to renew it or buy add ons. Can anyone enlighten me[?] PLEASE[msneek]

Openoffice have their own versions of word, excel etc. It's full blown version and it's free to download.

It's as good as the microsoft product's.

That seems a good idea but I will have to check if the college uses the same format if not I am back to my original question about Office 2007.

Open office is fully compatible, some laptops come with it preloaded now. Office does not expire after 365 days. The version I have is 5 years old. You should at the very least by the student version and save money but open office is just as good and free.

Way back 1n 1997 we bought the student version of office for my daughter who was then studying for her GCSEs we are still using this version with no problem, the only problem we could have is that as it is now so old you can no longer get any support for it. So you should have no problems.

There are 'school' versions now that can be licenced for just the one year so it is quite possible that it is only a 365 day licence.

I'll add another vote for OpenOffice, it's free and you can save the files into all the Microsoft formats so anyone using MS Office can open it.

Hope this info isn't too late Wendy:

Microsoft do allow students a copy of Office 2007, with no expiry, for an amazing £37, ONE copy per student only. Follow this

    http://www.microsoft.com/uk/educatio...s/default.aspx

    or this:

    http://www.software4students.co.uk/

I have ordered from this deal in the past, when it was £47, and it is quite genuine, you get the full version of Microsoft Office 2007, not the cut-down Student Edition, which has less programs (no database or publishing program I seem to remember). It is a fantastic bargain.I have just ordered another copy, now I have another qualifying student at college, and was amazed that the price is now £37 (it says £35 but then they add a "transaction fee" !

    I hope this helps.

Incidentally, if anyone decides to go down the Open Office path, beware that there are LOTS of web sites out there that will claim you need to register with them before you can download the program. This is not the case. If you download from :

    http://www.openoffice.org/

you won't be asked for any personal details. Any site that does require you to register will be selling your e-mail address on and you can expect a lot of junk mail!

There are also sites which ask you to PAY for Open Office - this is really to take advantage of daft people who haven't grasped the concept of actually getting something for nothing. Open Office is totally free.

    Dave.
