    Surgical Plates _ Airport Scanners

Off to Florida in 4 weeks time. My wife fractured her leg in February and had a plate inserted in her fibia. Will this cause any problems with security? She has been discharged by her consultant and the travel insurance company are aware of the injury.[?]

I think you'll find that the plate is titanium? You just need a letter from your wife's doctor explaining that she has a plate in her leg which you can show should there be any problems and she should be just fine.

I have Titanium screws and plates in my spine after the consultant had to remove two discs. I have flown twice since the operation and the metal detectors dont even bleep. My wife also has two steel rods implanted and the only place they set off the alarms was Sanford!! She has flown countless times after her op and it was only this time (3 weeks ago!) that the alarms went off.

My daughter has had several plates, screws and wires in her hip and pelvis and whenever she has travelled I cannot recall the alarms going off. We have never carried a doctors note explaining the metal implants and up to now there has never been a problem.

Just wait, the next time we go through security I bet the alarm sounds.

I have a titanium plate in my arm. I have been told it should not be a problem.

I would get a doctors letter just to give you reasurance, but wouldn't expect any problems. If you set off the alarms, then they do a hand or wand search

    Hey Guys.

Bits that we have to put in you to strengthen a joint or bridge a fracture are made of Titanium alloys (as Blott says).
These are known as non-ferromagnetic - ie they do not upset a magnetic field (which is what airport security detectors are). This is done so that at anytime in the future you are not excluded from having an MRI scan.
As a result, it should not be picked up by an airport scanner.
The only dangers are if you get treated in a cheap 'independant treatment centre' in Eastern Europe, where quality control is not so good. More and more people are being paid by the NHS to get treatment abroad, rather than investing in our own hospital services.

If anyone has a story about a medical device setting off airport security, it would make an interesting story!........please post

My daughter has a plate and srews on her skull due to a bone graft much to her disappointment she has never set an alarm off. She wanted to tell security "I must have a screw loose"[msnwink]
