Vita Mix 5000 Does anyone own one?

I'm posting here to try and reach the most people. We saw this machine demonstrated at the Royal Cornwall Show on Saturday. It looks great and just what we have been looking for but it is really expensive.

It is a US Company. I've done a fair bit of research on the internet and so far it all looks very positive. Before I part with the money I just wanted to know if anyone had any experience of using one either in the UK or US?

Sorry, I know nothing about kitchen appliances, but I can't imagine it being better than anything a quarter of the price from John Lewis (other department stores are available)[msnwink]

It claims to be about 2.5KW, is that in case you decide to chop some wood with it?

Not a constructive review, I realise, and definitely not what you wanted to hear, but it was my initial reaction when I Googled it.

My mum has one and it does to the job but o would not pay the money for one. I have a £40 blender bought in France that is as good.

Yes, we have one, the best £400 that we have ever spent, anyone thinking that a £40 blender is in the same class obviously hasn't seen them working.

It makes soup from cold whisking that fast that it heats the liquid, ice cream, the best smoothies that you will ever have, no contest.

You buy it Nina if that's what you feel like, you will not regret it.

I guess I must have been dreaming then [msnwink] I have used the vita and do not see any advantage of spending £360 over the one we have. Which does all what you mention below. It gets used a lot. I bought mainly for frozen drinks but found it far more useful. We bought if from France (the big mall as you get off the tunnel)when we first got back to the UK so around 5 years old now and still going strong. The make is blendtech and has a 3.5hp motor, so it is powerful. I see not difference in performance, the Vita is definitely quieter though.
Also I not not saying the Vita does not perform, it is a top end blender.

Thanks everyone for your input. I know it's an awful lot of money Dave which is why I wanted to hear if anyone had experience of using one.

Martin your Blend tech bought five years ago for £40 was an absolute bargain. You will probably be shocked to know that the Blend tech Total Blender now retails at £399!

We drink a lot of smoothies and juices (even before it became trendy) plus I have wanted an ice cream maker for ages but the good ones are expensive. Also having used the peanut butter making machine in the old Neals Yard Covent Garden shop and more recently the various nut butter machines in the Orlando WholeFoods Market we would like to make our own here but again the machines cost a fortune. The Vita Mix and the Blend Tech do all these things and much more, so using my womans logic not only are we saving money buying one machine but space too!

But the main reason for wanting one is for our Lories. They eat what is basically a smoothie but the dry ingredients (fruit baby food) is getting harder to find and more expensive. I always add a banana to their daily food and a soft pear but this has to be peeled. With the Vita mix I will be able to chuck in whole fruit, apples for example and they will be blended smooth enough for them to eat, plus they will get a greater variety.

I have now ordered one and am expecting it to arrive next week, so Roger I may be coming to you for hints and tips if that’s O.K. Do you use yours every day?

One of the great things about this forum is that with so many members you can always find someone who has the answer to just about any question on any subject [msnsmile2]

The other ithing about these forums is it always encourages youu to find things you don't know. I had to look up what a Lory was as hadnt eard of them before. So that's todays lesson learnt then.

We have a Nanday Conure and I must admit I hadn't thought of using it for food for her, and Nina, if we can help we will, just send us a DM.
We do use it every day and have done for the last 3 or 4 years.

I have seen these at The Ideal Home Exhibition and really want one but the price!!!!!! If they come down a bit, I will definitely buy one. My son wants one too, but he is choosing the most expensive (is it Silver or white??) and so doesn't want to pay the price yet. We both keep thinking about it because we are both into healthy, natural food and love making it ourselves. I am sooooooo tempted but my pocket isn't! [msnsad]

Here is a photo of one of our Dusky Lories, currently a proud dad! He is very cheeky.
We also have an Edwards Lorikeet who is a very old lady but adorable.

Nanday Conures are great characters, do you have a picture of her? (may save Steph having to look them up ) The Lories require an almost totally liquid diet so I'm hoping the Vit Mix will be ideal for them.
