    Alamo credit card swipe

Just wondered if anyone has used alamo at sanford, I have seen various different answers for how much they hold on a credit card, i e-mailed them and they said it was only $50 but others have said when they have got there it was more and depended on the agent at the desk, i have booked silver with us car hire. thank you in advance for any help, Andy

We have to tell all customers they will swipe up to $500 as that is the official Alamo rule.

In practise from personal experience and also from feedback from others they usually take much less if anything.

The bottom line is that when they swipe your card you are authorizing the rental company to take any charges that you have agreed to (for optional extras such as child seats, enhanced roadside assistance, tank of fuel on Silver option) plus other charges that become applicable such as toll fines and late return charges.

I don't think they actually take the money Bernadette, it's an authorisation (I thought it may also include an amount for any excess that could be due if you had an accident). So if they need to take any money then it is already authorised (to stop people maxing out their credit card whilst they are away and then giving them no way to recover what is due to them.
I read of one case in the paper yesterday where it was accidentally taken and refunded the next day.

It should only be for fuel and late fees, if you have an accident this excess is covered in the silver and gold insurance, i double checked with the website and there is a link to sanford and their t&c which says you must leave $300 in either cash or a cc but again many people have reported that they have left as little as $50, i think its the peron you speak to on the day at the desk.
