In the past we have had 5 of us travelling but my eldest daughter doesn't want to come next time (none of us can believe it[msnoo])We had a 7 seater last time. Will a full size car be big enough for 4 and luggage? Probably 4 suitcases going, 5 coming back. (We have more shopping than 1 suitcase but we take old clothes that we ditch and replace with the lovely new ones[msnwink])
Id say no!! We had 4 of use with 4 cases, handluggage and a set of golf clubs. We had booked a full size but upgraded to a SUV and it cost us $600 for the luxury!!
Most US car trunks (boots) are smaller than you would expect in the UK for a similar size car so if you're taking four/five large suitcases, then the answer is no. Umless you're prepared to sit with some inside the car on the way from and to the airport, you need a bigger vehicle.
From our experience, a full size trunk will take one of the largest size 'hard' type suitcases, one smaller one of the same type and perhaps two hand luggage trolley cases - if you're really good at manouvering stuff around to fit it in.

we usually go for the 7 seater 4 x 4 eg a Durango for 4 of us, or 8 seater Suburban if there are 6 of us as you need the extra room for luggage.
Last year wife and I along with 3 teen's (15 & two 18's)hired a full sized car which was a Pontiac Grand Prix. We had plenty
room inside, the boot space was quite good also, but admit was a bit of a squeeze returning to the airport with an extra case,
as the boot shape is sort of low but wide and deep if you know what I mean.
