    Diesel Engines

Does anyone know if there is an option to hire diesel cars?

Never been given that option, maybe they worry that as it is less usual that people will put petrol in it

We are hiring a 7 seater minivan from Alamo via this site. Could anyone tell me whether this will be petrol or diesel?

Petrol. I've never heard of a diesel based rental vehicle in the USA.

How very true... I worked for an emergency center for 5 years, you have no idea of the number of people who put the wrong fuel in their rental cars and called to get help....[msnscared]... although the rental company DO put stickers all over the place, paople just don't pay attention I guess [msnwink]

The historical problem with diesels in the USA has been their failure to meet the emission standards for California, coupled with a higher sulpher content of much of the fuel. Although very recently some of the big foreign manufacturers(Mercedes etc) have produced compatible models.

Also diesel is 10%-12% more expensive than petrol.

I get all this from my pal out there who tows an RV with a Dodge pick up with 6.7L turbo diesel. He thinks it is great, but it is nowhere near as smooth as European Turbo diesels

I'm sorry, I was talking about rentals in France, where diesel is very common. And almost 100% of the concerned tourists were Americans, who are not used to using diesel engines.
If they start renting diesel cars in the US, believe me they will place stickers on the trap to let you know you're driving one [msnwink].

Renting a vehicle in the US is really simple because every single one of them takes the lowest octane petrol so you don't even have to think about what you're doing at the pumps - apart from avoiding the few diesel ones that is! [msnwink]
