Thank you for the info. We usually do gold option but as only 2 drivers this time have gone for silver. We had better give ourselves some extra time on the journey as we are using Tampa so have no idea where there is a nearby filling station!!

We had silver option with Budget this time. When we picked up from Tampa the assistant charged us for a tank of fuel even though we told her not too. Having said that the cost per gallon was the same price as the petrol stations and even cheaper than some. We then took the car back empty.

I much prefer the bring back full option, as you know exactly where you stand with the fuel.
However it looks like the rental company has found a way to get a little extra cash out of you with this option as well.
Do they fill it up whilst you are there? If not how do you know if they actually did put any in?
And to not find out about it till you get back home leaves you with no way of challenging.
It seems like the rental companies always find a way to skim a little more.................
This by the way, is in no way aimed at Roger and his team, which do an excellent job.

Personally I agree with their new policy, and also trust Budget to be honest in their calculations. There are so many people that complain to us (to Budget) that although indicating full, they had 1-2 gallons less fuel as not quite full.
It's one of those situations where Budget can not win either way, and people will find a way to complain which ever way it works.
The bottom line is that provided the car is genuinely filled up at the closest possible gas station (which has always been the proper way to do it) then there wont be an issue.
Budget's terms do actually say that you should keep your receipt for that final re-fill, so if there is an issue you can prove you went to a particular gas station to do so.

It will only ever be a charge for the actual fuel they have to put in (at their high rate per gallon). So if they manage to get 1.5 gallons in you would end up with a charge of around $12.

Can I just clarify this? If the tank isn't full in Budget's view, do they charge for the amount required to top up or for a full tank? I think I could live with having to pay a few dollars more for the odd gallon.

Thanks.
i got back this morning and am currently catching up-when i took the car back the agent scanned it with a tricorder and charged me $34.58 for fuel service. i anticipated this.is this now the end?
one point worth noting is that gas is currently running about $2.50-$2.55 per gall. when i arrived at budget they offered me the full tank option at $2.29 which i refused as i thought it was going to a rip off! maybe something to think about.
