    Doggy Bag

Is there anywhere that won't do a doggy bag? We have never tried this and just end up leaving food (which I hate doing) or getting so stuffed I have to roll out the door[msnembarrased]And do you ask for a doggy bag?

I don't think there are many places, apart from all you can eat buffets, where I do not end up asking for a doggy bag. So far I have never been refused or made to feel awkward.

They all do, except the buffets but you can get that to go if you want. My hubby was most upset when we went to Mannys Chophouse that the chicken starter was so big he couldnt manage that and the steak that was coming (and anyone who knows him will know how unusual that is) so got the rest in a box to go and then left it on the table. only realised when we'd driven away.

Samantha don't be shy about asking for a doggy bag, it's common practice. They are often offered and you are more likely to get strange looks if you refuse! Even the very smart restaurants do them. We were mortified when our American friends asked for one in Tchoup Chop but the waiter didn't turn a hair and presented them with a beautifully wrapped package! It's the same with the discount coupons you see everywhere. Enjoy! [msnwink]

It's very common and you shouldn't have any fears about asking.

It works much better for some foods than others though. We used to do it pretty much every time we ate out but found that our leftovers always looked pretty unappealing the next day and ended up being thrown away anyway.

Thanks guys. Will try it next time but must say it has never been offered in all the times we have been. Maybe we just eat a lot and they didn't think it worthwhile with what was left[msnembarrased]

Just ask them to put what's left in a box for you (don't even bother pretending it's for your dog), and they will do it without a blink, except as said above when it's an all-you-can-eat buffet (makes sense[msnwink]).
I love it, because this way I can sample appetizer, entree and dessert without feeling guilty I'm wasting half of it. Of course I've forgotten my share of boxes on the table too [msncry].

One thing that will help you feel more comfortable about asking, is to think of it as a compliment to the Chef. If you say something like,
"This is really wonderful, but I really can't manage it all now and it would be such a shame to waste something this good, please have the rest to go?"

If you leave half a plate of food, the Chef has no way of knowing whether you just don't like it, it's not cooked very nicely or you just have a small appetite.

Most servers should ask if you want a box for the food. If not, just ask. But don't ask for a doggy bag! You'll get the same looks you got when you asked "where can I smoke a fag?" Not good!

What do you call it then?
