I think that the globes on the lake at Universal are screens and movies are projected on them at night.
Also there are shows on the lake which link to what is projected on the "screens".

Or does anyone know better?

Yes you are right - they are screens showing clips of some of the big movies. There are also projections onto the surrounding buildings. We have been on a New Year's Eve and the films are linked to a soundtrack, music, lasers and fireworks - a truly memorable experience!
