I always carry my passport and other important documents in a money belt with me everywhere i go. It's never worth the risk of losing it!

We have a double lockable cupboard at our villa just for us. We keep a number of things in it which are extemely useful when we are in Florida but no use taking back to the UK.
We lock our passports in this cupboard for safe keeping along with other things we feel need to be kept safe.

If the place you are staying doesn't have a safe I would leave it in a pocket in a suitcase. If the suitcase is empty it is unlikely to be of interest to any thief.

I always carry mine with me.
I was asked in Target the other day to show ID because I was buying wine. I told the cashier I was flattered.....I'm the wrong side of 50 [msnwink]
I read an article the other day that suggested taking a photocopy of your passport and always carrying that with you separately, just in case the passport gets lost/stolen, as it would make it an awful lot easier to get a replacement.

...other than as an easy way to carry away all your other belongings...![]()

Our villa has 2 safes but if we didn't have one we would hide them on top of the kitchen cabinets or somewhere like that.

It makes no difference, as they have all the info on file anyway. You get issued with a temp permit to travel, which is basicly a sheet of A4 paper. Took me about 30 minutes to get mine issued, I was very impressed with how quick and easy everything was.

where is the first point of contact if you do loose your passport?
My passport goes with me where ever I go,
reason one
I drive in the US and accordingly may need photo ID
reason two
I purchase alcohol in the US and accordingly may need photo ID (I did five years ago at aged 46 in Wallmart!!!!)
I just take great care and know where my PP is at all times.<blockquote id="quote" class="ffs">quote:Originally posted by shona

After being stopped by the Park Ranger in CA we learned the hard way to always carry photo ID.
I was also asked for it a couple of times on our most recent trip when paying by CC.
