    Hi there - I'm Dave...

I came across this forum by accident and have found it very interesting!

I have been to Florida on many occsaions but sadly am currently looking for work so I cant see us going back there for many years.

My first visit to Florida was almost by accident as I wanted some Autumn sun and went to a local travel agent for advise. When they suggested Orlando I immediately objected on the grounds I didn't like Micky Mouse..

I will never forget there reply, which went something like..."There are only two types of people in this world...those who thing Disney World is on of the most amazing experiences on this planet - and those have never been!"

Having been there at least 10 times since, I think she may have been right!

Hi Dave, Welcome to the forum. Hopefully you will find a job soon and be able to travel to Florida again. When you do you will find this forum full of helpful tips and advice.

I don't think the travel agent was entirely accurate. I would add that there are also people who know that there is far more to Florida and especially the Orlando area than Disney World and the other theme parks.

A quick look at the guides on here will show there really is something for everyone whatever your age or interests, the parks are just the tip of the iceberg.

We are keen on natural history and have been amazed at what we have seen even just on our villa doorstep. Watching otters in the pond outside while still in bed was especially memorable. I later sat quietly by the pond and they carried on as if I wassn't there, coming just inches away from me. I've also sat on the grass outside our pool cage and had a very curious family of Sandhill cranes investigate me, truly magical experiences.

Good luck with the job hunt.

Thanks to those who have welcomed me to the forum and your messages of good luck.

I have no doubt there is more to Florida than Mickey and as a family we have experienced some of natures best.

I think the point the TA was trying to make was that alot of people (and I included me when I first went) just thought of Orlando and then thought of Mickey.

Back in Winter 2000/2001 we took my inlaws who were of this opinion - and they certainly had their eyes opened and couldnt wait to go back!

Hello Dave and welcome to the forum.

I hope that you find a job soon, but in the meantime I'm sure that you'll find lots of interesting reading on here!

I agree with your observation that many people who have not been think of Orlando/Mickey Mouse as being synonymous, but of course there is so much more to see and do.
