Deposit question

Sorry about this but it may seem daft!
I hear that we have to have a credit card swipe for approx $500 when we pick our car up, but , and here is the daft bit, do I have to have $500 on my card? Its just a matter of paying my credit card off of having a reasonable amount on it?
Told you it was daft!! We have had a few issues with finances over the past few months and I was wondering about juggling the pennies(again)

Although the payment is not actually taken from your account, you do need the money available on your account as they 'block' it off from your spending limit.

It's a fair question and I think something a lot of people aren't aware of. It's also common with hotels.
