    e-passport.??

My 1 year old grandson will be travelling with us in april.
We are just getting his first passport and I noticed this comment on the Homeland security site, can anyone shed any light on this matter please.

e-Passports. The United States requires that travelers entering the United States under the Visa Waiver Program have an e-Passport if their passport was issued on or after October 26, 2006.

I have also asked them if they can clarify when the ESTA program will be fully operational.

I assume they mean one with the electronic reader in it. It is shown by the numbers and letters along the bottom of the photo page. All passports in the UK were issued like that from October 2006, but some people who had passports issued by offices in other countries, don't have this

As I understand it, ESTA became fully operational on January 12th. It is now compulsary.

ESTA has nothing to do with UK passports and is replacing (in time) the visa waiver program.
