If you have a word with your villa owner you may be able to arrange a welcome pack of basics to last till morning.

Kimbo it depends where you are staying, but Walmart is open 24 hours - but you might not feel up to facing that! Walgreens are also open 24 hours and you can get milk, bread, cheese, coffee etc.

You can take tea bags with you - in fact would recommend it if you like any type of specialist tea or strong English tea, as Liptons is main one available in US unless you go to one of the specialist Brit food marts.

I also take some chocolate as we don't like Hersheys, but manage to acquire a taste for m&m's and mini snickers. Also the gals like Walkers Crisps so I take a few bags of those with me, otherwise by the end of the hols they are so into withdrawal that I have to buy the odd bag at one of the food marts - at great cost!

Baked beans are also an arm and a leg, so that is something else we take out with us.

Not allowed, mincemeat, mince pies, christmas pudding or christmas cake, anything with fruit in or meat.

YEs, No meats should be taken over, but you can bring cheese. I use to bring Italian wine over but not you cannot bring it on the plane and I do not want to take the chance of it opening up in my luggage. There are also many 24 gas stations that have food marts, so you can just run in and grab the essentials.

The tin tuna may not make it past customs, they may class it as a meat product and confiscate it.

Your villa owner may be able to recommend a place close to the villa where you can stop for essentials, as everyone has mentioned, there are lots of shops open 24hrs or until 11pm so that you can run in ang get some basics, just in case.

Also worth asking is if there are restaurants that will deliver to the villa so if you arrive late and want dinner, you can always phone up and have a pizza and soda or something else delivered. Some restaurants that don't do deliveries will do a take away order (often referred to as a TO GO order) so someone just has to run out and get it (but if you don't know the area, that is not always the best option.

We got stopped coming through customs because I forgot that i had an apple in my bag. The dog sniffed us out in the customs queue and we were marched off - I thought someone had planted drugs on us. Best bit was the apple was produce of USA, but it was confiscated and we were warned to behave ourselves in future. I'd get food delivered for your arrival.[:I]
