    Ryanair

What do you guys think of the anouncement today the Ryanair is going to start transatlantic routes with seats from only 10.00
it seems they are going to buy up some the planes from the companies who have went bust .
The will fly into smaller U.S airports ......

Good news if it works [msnwink]

Google the name Ryanair to get the full story

The only thing I would be sceptical about this is the fact that not all seats will be £10. They always advertise this and then the remainder are full whack, they have to make money somewhere!

Also Ryanair always charge for all the extras (food, baggage etc), so savings could be almost wiped out by adding all these extras.

In my view any extra competition to Florida is a good thing and if it means more people can get to experience the wonders of Florida then I am all for that.

Also when you look at the breakdown of a fare with BA for example at the end of August the total return fare is £399.70. The actual fare return is £117 taxes charges etc £282.70. You will be fed, given drinks and be allowed 2 bags total 46kg. Assuming Ryanair is quoting £10 each way that is a saving of £97 and then goodness knows what it will cost you for a bag and food. If it meant they would fly from my local airport (B'ham) it would be great, and even better if they landed in Kissimmee airport - however, that will not be the case so I miss out anyway. Looks as though I will still be travelling 2-3 hours to Manchester etc. At least Orlando Int is only 20 mins from the villa, so it is not so bad from the Orlando side getting 'home'.

I agree though that it would be good to get some competition with other airlines, perhaps they will all bring their prices down.

If recent years tell us anything at all about air travel it has to be that most passengers put price at the top of their considerations when making their choices. Let's face it, nobody boards a plane because of the food on offer and these days you can buy your own inflight media and watch/listen to what you want. I'm no fan of Mr O'Leary's outfit but if the price was attractive, I'd certainly consider it. If nothing else, they'll provide competition for some of the monopoly carriers.

Incidentally, have Ryanair said they're looking at Florida as a destination?

Airlines can manipulate taxes and charges to suit their own purposes.

That BA fare includes a huge fuel surcharge.

I am booked with American Airline from Manchester to MCO later this month. Their figures are:

    Fare = £239, Taxes and fees = £88.20, Total = £327.20

I am cashing in my AA accrued airmiles next year and will have four trips in First Class from Manchester to Orlando. You just pay the Taxes and the total for each return trip is £105.50 and this includes the £80 GB Air Passenger duty for a long haul trip ex UK in first class.

On the other hand, I had a dispute with AA about the taxes for a flight last summer(2007), and got a full breakdown of all the codes on my ticket. These were:

GB Tax (air Passenger Duty) = £40
    UB Tax (passenger Service
    charge international departures) = £12.70
AY Tax (US Security fee) = £5.20
    US Tax (Int'l Transportation Tax) = £15.40
XA Tax (US APHIS User Fee) = £2.60
XF Tax (Passenger Facility Tax) = £2.30
XY Tax (US Federal Inspection fee)= £3.60
YC Tax (US Customs User Fee) = £2.60
TQ Tax (Security Tax) = £64.80

    TOTAL = £149.20

You can still get the odd last minute charter to Orlando for a little over £100.

So from that conflicting set of taxes and charges how much will Ryanair charge?

Whilst it would be very convenient to fly from Stansted (20 minutes down the road) direct to Florida I am not a lover of Ryanair and guess by the time you have added in all the extras and lack of baggage it will be Gatwick or Heathrow.

How is a girl going to do much shopping with only a 15K baggage allowance!

We flew ryan air from Bournemouth to Spain last week....never again it was all just a great big con.

Just try only putting 15Kg in a case, it only half fills an average size case and they won't let you share across 2 or 3 cases. We ended up paying over £1k for 4 tickets and then had to take 3 half packed suitcases to make sure we stayed under the 15kg rule. It was amazing how many people fell foul of this and then were charged £12 per Kg excess baggage, loads of people were paying in excess of £100 extra at the airport on top of the charges they already made for bags and priority boarding etc.

Then, to add insult to injury, on the way home they decided to first weigh my checked baggage see it was all under 15kg and send it of down the track and then weigh my hand luggage. One of the cases was 10.5kg (the allowance is 10kg)and she would not give my my boarding cards until I took some of the clothes out of the hand luggage and put them on!!!!!![msnmad]I have no idea what difference it makes if those clothes were in my hand luggage or on my back, they are still the same weight and still on the same plane, it was not like I could not safely lift my bag into the locker!

When I asked if she could return my checked luggage so that I could put the excess 500 gramms into that she refused so I literally had to take 2 jumpers out of the bag and put them on, walk round the corner and put them back in the hand luggage!!! I travel a lot and have never had an experience like this before. The only thing budget about this airline is it stupid rules designed to catch you out so that they can rip you off, there was certainly nothing budget about the price.

We only flew with them because we live very close to the Bournemouth airport and whilst i like to get a good price for things (which this was not) i much prefer to get value for money. Never again, if we can't get the usual Palm air flight I would rather drive to Heathrow next time.

So as far as I am concerned they can fly where they want, they just won't have me on their plane[msnmad]. Still it did make me feel better to see that they have posted record drop (47%) for the first half on the year profits. (I know, I know I should just learn to let it go.......[msnwink])

While I agree that 15kg might not be a lot, I do find it hard to have sympathy with passengers who don't know the weight of their bags before they check in. I do a lot of flying but I've never had to pay excess charges because I don't just turn up at the airport and hope for the best.

It's hardly the airline's fault if people don't stay within the published rules.
