Gated Community vs. not gated

Nearly done both in my time so who knows....lol
My friends live in gated ... they have to because the area in Canada of all places.. where they live is not that nice...we were also advised to have gated when we looked in the same general area....I'd never seen gated before...and it just reminds me of living in a place that is not that nice...and FL for the most part feels safe...I don't really want a daily reminder that in some places people need gated...
