American Express in particular are very quick to decline and block payments that they think are out of the ordinary.

A lot of the time they aren't actually declined but "Referred" which means the card company wants you to get in touch and verify the payment.

On a related note, how quickly does USCarhire normally charge a credit card?

I booked a car on the 30th July and there is still no charge for the deposit on my card. My confirmation came through okay so i'm assuming everythings okay and i've managed to do it at just the right time to get an extra months credit, but these days transactions are usually very swift.

    I work for a bank.

Sometimes the problem occurs when the lines are down between the retailer and the card processing centre.

How do you block a card to just pay for car hire?

[/quote]You do it when you apply for the card.

At work we have a few corporate cards and some have blocks on them which say they can only used for specific purchases, if an attempt is made to use them for anything else they are declined, stopped and reissued.
