Not sure it will cause a problem with the car hire side of things but I am pretty sure that I have read somewhere it is actually an offence not to notify DVLA of your change of address.

That wont be a problem at all from a car rental point of view.

As Roger says, that does not cause a problem with the actual rental, but to keep yourself the right side of the law it is quick and easy to change your address online with DVLA.

My husband ordered a new licence last Thursday morning as he couldn't find his old one. The new one arrived on Tuesday. When I ordered my first photocard one a couple of months ago as I only had a paper one it arrived in three days.

It's quicker if you've had a photocard licence before (in DH's case) or if you have a fairly recent passport (in my case) as they can cross-check with the passport agency and check all your details and even use your passport photo so you don't have to send one in.
