    New York 2/3 nights

Hello all. We are looking at flights via New York for our next trip (end August) and thought it might be good to break the journey and spend 2-3 nights in New York.

Having a hard time deciding what areas to look for. Can anyone suggest an area that is in a good area to see all the sights please.

Also thinking of doing the same in Atlanta on the journey back - any thoughts.

    Thanks in advance.

p.s. if this is in the wrong place, please feel free to move it where is should go.

For New York i would recommend the Upper West Side. I stayed in a hotel on W77th St and Broadway last sept for 5 weeks with work. I found it to be a great location as it was quite residential with great restuarants and bars and considerabily cheaper prices and better food than around Time Sq for instance.

There is the subway located at W79th St or W72nd St for the number 1, 2 and 3 train which will have you in Time Sq in 5mins or 34th St right at Macys in a further minute.

If you have any other questions let me know

We stayed at the 'Milford Plaza' which is just off Time Square and was within walking distance of most of the sites.

We had an apartment on the upper west side on 72nd and Broadway. Great, loads of bars, delis etc and a short walk from Times Square. We also took the tourist on and off bus from Times square so we could see the sites and get off at the ones we wanted to investigate further.

Thanks guys, Broadway area sounds like a good base. We can do the tourist bits and have the best of both worlds.

I may ask a few other questions once I start to look around for hotels in the area if that's ok.

We have had 24 hour stopovers in Atlanta and it is surprising how much can be seen. Each time we have stayed at a hotel close to the Airport, taken the courtesy bus back to the airport next morning then caught the MARTA train into the city. Tickets cost about $2 and the journey to the centre of Atlanta takes 20 minutes. There is a left luggage facility so we leave our cases at the airport.

    There are many attractions including:-

Margaret Mitchell house and museum where you can see the house (and ancient typewriter) where she wrote Gone with the Wind. The Museum next door has many original photographs and film clips from the making and premiere of the film including the front door of Tara and the famous portrait of Scarlett which Rhett Butler threw a drink at.

Atlanta History Centre with exhibitions from the civil war through to the 1996 Olympic Games.

Georgia Aquarium – I have not seen it yet but my son tells me it is one of the best Aquariums.

There are dozens of museums from the (Martin Luther) King Centre to the World of Coca Cola.

If you need more retail therapy there is also 250 stores at the Lenox Square Mall.

We have done exactly this on our return leg in Sept. We are staying on Manhatton side.

Looking forward to it as never been through New York before.

The idea is starting to appeal more and more. My daughter also looked into staying in Atlanta on the way back.

She hates flying so ideally would like a direct flight (we keep checking the prices), but if we did look at a stop over she does not mind that so much as two flights in one day..... Bless.

I am currently looking for an apartment to rent in new york end of aug for 8 nights there are some good and some not so good ones around. How many people in your group and maybe we can share the research, apartments seem to be about the same as an hotel room so it is just for the space and some do allow 2 to 3 nights stay.
