    Indirect flights

Following on from recent threads as to whether to take an indirect flight or not what the Americans call cabin/hand luggage has a different meaning to those of us in restricted UK.

Almost everything but the kitchen sink is taken on planes as hand luggage, cases that passengers cannot physically get up into the overhead lockers. I have seen passengers put their cases in the first available empty locker and then walk to the back of the plane to find their seat.

Must confess to being somewhat unBritish in my attitude on an US domestic flight - you have to fight for your corner.

Clare there is enough room on the plane for all peoples hand luggage . We have found that the US air crew keep a eye on people getting on a plane more than the UK crews and have seen them moving bags to other places that people do as you say put them on and then go to near the back .
We fly with DELTA and the crews do not like this kind of practies .
It is usualy business people that do this as they have no luggage handed in when booking in .

I'm firmly with Clare on this - you wouldn't get near the aircraft in the UK with most of the bags brought onboard in the US as 'Hand Baggage'. For that reason the UK crews don't need to be vigilant because the power mad Jobsworths at security have already done that job for them.

At least boarding in the UK is much quicker as a result. Every US domestic flight I take (and I take quite a few of them) takes forever to board because of the slack attitude at the Gate & Security.

I must admit I do laugh when you see a small suitcase trying to be squeezed into the overhead locker and then all the people on their row have to put the bags by their feet.

I think some people should be allowed extra internal baggage (people with young babies and disabled people who need extra bits and pieces).

When we flew with Delta the cabin crew were being very strict with passengers prior to boarding. There were people trying to board with large cases and three or more pieces of luggage and they were not allowed to do so. People were getting very upset and security had to be called to deal with one person. The last we saw of him was him being escorted away. It appeared that most of these people were business travellers not those on holiday.

I'm glad to hear that Delta were dealing with the situation that way. I always feel like the 'little person' with my UK limited hand luggage when I am on the Newark/Tampa flight.
