The usa embassy site wants a passport that is valid for as long as your stay
    from the official site:

Does my British passport have to be valid for six months beyond my date of departure from the United States?

No, if your passport is not valid for at least six months beyond your date of departure from the United States, it will not affect your eligibility to travel. The United States has an agreement with the United Kingdom automatically extending the validity of a passport for six months past the passport's expiration date. Therefore, your passport need remain valid only for the duration of your stay in the United States.

If you are traveling visa free under the Visa Waiver Program and your passport is not valid for 90 days, you will be admitted into the United States until the date on which the passport expires.

However many airlines want passports to be valid for 6 months so check with them and if you think you need to renew yours then remember you don't have to wait until it expires -you can do it up to9 months before hand and you will be credited with extra months.

I don't think you will find that it is any airlines policy, but simply because some of their staff have not appreciated that the regulations have changed - it used to be that you required an unexpired period of 6 months - but it changed a couple of years ago.

Also some travel agents have the old out of date documentation from airlines that stipulated 6 months.

We were in Orlando at the end of March and had less than 1 month left on our passports. The only thing we were not able to do was the online check in.

Why would the length of time left on your passport affect whether or not you could do online check in?

I cant answer your question properly, we tried to do the online check in and after putting in our passport details we were told we could not check in online as there were less than 90 days left on our passports. We didnt have a problem checking in at the airport so it must just be how the programme has been written for online check in.

You can travel without six months left but again we were unable to check in online.
